Kalalau Trail Hike

The great hike begins.  Two years earlier, we had hiked only the first half mile of this trail and decided when I wasn't pregnant we would have to come back and hike the whole thing.  It is beautiful!

A sneak peak of the Napali Coast.

Hanakapi'ai Beach.  This is one of those gorgeous places you have to hike, fly, or boat to.

It's a two mile hike to the beach then another two inland to Hanakapi'ai Falls.  It had rained a ton a few days before our hike and the trail was quite muddy and slippery.  We had our lunch on the beach and got started towards the falls.

Our view along the trail toward the falls... until we turned around.  The trail was so muddy and slippery that we had to turn around.  We were all very disappointed but with Kate on Jason's back it was just unsafe.  The mud was so deep and wet we couldn't keep our feet still and were sliding everywhere.  I ended up with a lovely skinned knee from slipping and sliding through the mud.

A view of the beach on our way out.

On our hike back we came across a woman with a broken leg.  She and her husband and her 6 month old son were hiking and she slipped on the trail.  She was in a lot of pain and her husband was tied up holding the baby.  We stayed with them for half an hour or so and helped her get comfortable with some advil and ice packs.  I held the baby and asked about his heat rash.  Turns out he had hand, foot, mouth disease.  That would have been nice to know before I held him.  The helicopter came to pick her up and take her to the hospital then I took a Germ X shower.  The last thing we wanted was Kate getting hand, foot, mouth.

It was a rugged hike!  Four miles of careful hiking and some relaxing time at the beach, we had been gone for 5 hours.  Jason's take on it is since we didn't make it to the waterfall we will have to go back.  What a shame.
